4B90 Fault Code: EGR System Fault and Carbon Buildup (BMW Diesel)
4B90 means the DDE has judged the EGR system itself to be faulty. The usual causes are heavy carbon buildup, a seized valve or a failed EGR cooler — and if the cooler has cracked, this is no longer only an emissions issue.

4B90 is a code stored by the DDE on BMW diesels reporting a fault in the exhaust gas recirculation system. The difference from 4501 matters: 4501 says "the target flow was not achieved", while 4B90 says "there is something wrong with the system itself". It appears often on M57-engined E92 335d and on N47 cars, and behind it there is usually heavy carbon buildup, a seized EGR valve or a failed EGR cooler.
What Does 4B90 Mean?
The DDE commands the EGR valve, reads its position back and verifies the result through air mass. If an inconsistency appears at hardware level in that chain — the valve does not respond to commands, the position signal is implausible, or the system misses its target again and again — the DDE stops treating this as individual deviations and declares the system itself faulty, storing 4B90.
In practice this code rarely arrives alone. Finding 4501 (control deviation) or 290900 (air mass deviation) next to it is very common; they are different scenes of the same story. To establish the order, compare the repeat counters of the codes — they show which one started first.

Symptoms
• Check Engine light and, on some cars, a drivetrain warning.
• Power loss at part load and a lazy throttle response; sometimes limp mode.
• Rough idle and noticeably poor running when cold.
• Black smoke under load and higher fuel consumption.
• More frequent DPF regeneration and soot load rising quickly.
• With an internally cracked EGR cooler: coolant disappearing with no visible leak, white smoke from the exhaust and a sweet smell.
• A thick, oily layer of soot visible once the intake manifold comes off.
Possible Causes
• An EGR valve seized by heavy carbon buildup — it cannot move even when commanded. The most common cause.
• An intake manifold narrowed by soot, physically restricting flow.
• A blocked EGR cooler, so gas flow stays insufficient.
• An internal crack in the EGR cooler letting coolant into the exhaust side. Rare, but the most serious scenario.
• A failed electric EGR actuator or a drifted position signal.
• On vacuum systems: a cracked hose, a failed pressure converter, a weak vacuum pump.
• Connector corrosion, oxidised pins, a break in the wiring harness.
• High exhaust back pressure from a blocked DPF — the system can never reach its target.
• Predominantly short-trip use, the real accelerator of carbon buildup.
On some BMW diesel engines the EGR cooler has been the subject of a recall, because coolant leaking into it can combine with soot and create a fire risk. If you see 4B90 together with unexplained coolant loss or white smoke, have your dealer check your VIN for an open campaign before you do anything else.
Diagnostic Steps with OBDThink
With 4B90 the goal is to separate three things: does the valve move, does gas actually flow, and is the cooler intact? Those are three different repairs at three very different price levels.
• 1. Scan all modules and map the code chain. If the 4501 and 290900 counters are higher than 4B90, the story started with them.
• 2. Read the freeze frame: at what RPM, load and coolant temperature was the code stored? EGR works on a warm engine at part load.
• 3. Watch EGR target and actual position together. If the command changes and position stays fixed, the valve is mechanically stuck.
• 4. If position does follow, look at MAF: fresh air must drop clearly when EGR opens. If it does not, the blockage is in the cooler or the manifold.
• 5. Check the coolant level and the expansion tank. Unexplained loss is the earliest sign of an internally cracked cooler.
• 6. Watch for white smoke from the exhaust on a cold start; a sweet smell indicates coolant being burnt.
• 7. On vacuum systems, measure actuator vacuum and command the pressure converter in an activation test.
• 8. Evaluate DPF soot load and exhaust back pressure; while they stay high, EGR flow will never return to normal.

Watching EGR position and MAF in the same OBDThink recording is the fastest way to separate a valve failure from a blockage. Replacing parts without making that distinction is the most common mistake with 4B90.
The Fix
• EGR valve cleaning: remove and clean it where carbon has built up; in mild cases this is a lasting fix. Low to moderate cost.
• EGR valve replacement: needed when the actuator has failed or the valve is mechanically damaged. Moderate to high cost.
• Intake manifold cleaning: with thick soot the manifold comes off for mechanical cleaning. Moderate cost, mostly labour.
• EGR cooler: clean or replace if blocked; with an internal crack it must be replaced. Moderate to high cost.
• Recall check: if an open campaign applies to your VIN the work may be free — always ask before buying parts.
• Vacuum hoses and pressure converter: renew cracked lines, replace a valve that does not respond. Low cost.
• Connector and wiring repair: clean oxidised pins, repair broken wiring. Low cost.
• DPF: regeneration or cleaning if soot load is high. Moderate to high cost.
Reset the EGR adaptation values after cleaning or replacing parts. And remember that carbon returns at the same rate if the driving profile does not change; regular longer, higher-RPM journeys protect both the EGR and the DPF.
Can You Still Drive With This Code?
If the code is purely down to carbon blockage there is no immediate danger, but your emissions are out of specification and the DPF fills quickly. Coolant loss changes the picture completely: an internally cracked cooler is linked both to engine damage and to the fire risk behind the recalls. With those symptoms, stop driving and take the car to a workshop.
When working through 4B90 the order should be clear: first prove whether the valve moves, then verify through MAF whether gas actually flows, and only then question the condition of the cooler.
