Why Battery Registration Is Mandatory
When you replace the battery, the IBS module must be re-registered. Otherwise the car keeps charging using the old battery's profile.
— Tekin Code
All post-2007 BMWs have an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS). It tracks battery age, load history, and capacity. If you swap the battery without resetting IBS, the car still 'thinks' the old aged battery is installed and feeds the new one with the same charge profile — cutting new battery life by up to 40%.
What Happens If You Skip It?
• Overcharging → electrolyte loss, cell damage
• Start-stop system behaves erratically
• 'Battery discharge' warning on dashboard
• Charging voltage never reaches optimal
How to Register with OBDThink
Service → Battery Registration → select type (AGM/Flooded) → enter capacity (Ah) → Confirm. Done in 10 seconds.
Wrong battery type = wrong charging voltage. AGM charges at 14.4V, standard Flooded at 13.8V.
How to Find Capacity
Printed on top of the battery — usually 80Ah, 90Ah, or 105Ah. If faded, look up the serial on the manufacturer site.
