On the E90, seeing instant fuel consumption as a figure in the instrument cluster is enabled by setting DIGITAL_KVA in the KOMBI module to aktiv. After coding, current consumption appears numerically in the lower display. The value reads in litres per 100 km or miles per gallon depending on the car's unit setting.
What does the instant consumption readout measure?
The display combines the injector flow the engine control unit is calculating with road speed to produce consumption for that instant. Unlike the average figure, it carries no history at all: lift off and the number drops immediately, accelerate and it climbs. That is why the readout is used to see the effect of driving style on fuel use in real time.

Which E90 model years does it cover?
Community lists mark DIGITAL_KVA for every model year from 2006 through 2011, making it one of the broadest cluster codings available. You should still read your own KOMBI data, because on some software levels the line appears with a different suffix.

How do you code it?
The change is a single line in the KOMBI module. OBDThink is an independent BMW coding and diagnostics app and is not affiliated with BMW AG. Before writing to KOMBI, note your service information and trip computer values; per the source list, some cars have these reset after coding.
• Photograph the service data and average consumption values before you code.
• Switch the ignition on and leave the engine off; trip computer data reads reliably only in this state.
• Connect to the car with OBDThink and download the instrument cluster module's coding data.
• Save a backup, then find the DIGITAL_KVA line and set it to aktiv.
• Write the change and leave the ignition alone until the write completes.
• Take a short drive and confirm the value drops when you lift off the throttle.
Watching live injection time and road speed in OBDThink lets you sanity-check on the road whether the readout is producing a plausible figure.
How do you revert it?
Reverting means setting the DIGITAL_KVA line to nicht_aktiv. The readout disappears from the lower display while the trip computer's average consumption page is untouched. Where a pre-coding backup exists, restoring it is the cleaner route.

What should you know about reading it?
Instant consumption produces no meaningful value while the car is stationary, because speed is zero: in l/100 km the calculation runs to infinity so the display blanks or pegs at its maximum, while in MPG it simply falls to zero. A reading taken at idle or waiting at a light is not a fault symptom. Equally, the very low figures seen coasting downhill are normal.
This readout is not a diagnostic tool. If you suspect high consumption, judge a fuel system fault from the fuel trim values and stored faults in the engine control unit, not from the number on this display.
What if no figure appears?
First move the trip computer to the right page; you may need the stalk button to cycle through them. Second, read the KOMBI data back and confirm the value was really written. Third, if your car has iDrive, some versions show this information on the centre screen rather than the cluster, so it never appears in the lower display at all.
