BMW Sport Displays and Digital Speedometer Coding Guide
The BC_DIGITAL_V parameter in the KOMBI module shows a numeric speed readout in the instrument cluster, while Sport Displays adds live power and torque gauges to the iDrive menu. This guide covers which models qualify, the OBDThink coding steps and the revert path.

On many analog-cluster BMWs a single coding change also shows speed as a number; the relevant parameter is BC_DIGITAL_V in the KOMBI module. A second cosmetic feature, Sport Displays, adds live power and torque gauges to the iDrive menu. This guide covers the scope of both features, the coding steps and the revert path. OBDThink is an independent BMW coding and diagnostics app and is not affiliated with BMW AG.
What Do the Digital Speedometer and Sport Displays Show?
The digital speedometer prints the same speed signal the analog needle reads, as a number in the on-board computer line of the cluster. The needle stays in place; the number is simply an extra readout that refreshes continuously while the ignition is on. The feature is not hardware, it is a display option left dormant at the factory.
Sport Displays is a menu page that draws live power and torque values as gauges on the iDrive screen. Both features concern presentation only: they touch neither the engine software, nor the gearbox logic, nor the measured values themselves. That places both firmly in the low-risk, fully reversible class of coding changes.
Feature: numeric speed readout
Module: KOMBI instrument cluster
Parameter: BC_DIGITAL_V, value aktiv
Second feature: Sport Displays in the iDrive menu
Module: head unit, entry name varies with the software
Revert: value nicht_aktiv, or restore the backup
Identify your cluster type first: the number appears in the on-board computer line of analog clusters. Cars with the full digital cluster already show speed as a number, so only Sport Displays matters there.
Which Models and Cluster Types Are Covered?
Coverage follows the cluster and head unit rather than the model year; the hardware decides. The list below gathers the bodies people ask about most: analog-cluster F-series cars are the main candidates for the numeric speed, while Sport Displays additionally asks for the right head unit on the iDrive side.
• The analog 6WA cluster in F10, F20 and F30 cars shows the speed number in the on-board computer line after coding.
• The 6WB multifunctional display is the fully digital cluster; it already shows the speed as a number in its Sport layout, so the coding matters mainly for analog clusters.
• E90 and E60 clusters carry an older version of the same parameter and are covered in a separate guide.
• Sport Displays is coded in the head unit; CIC, NBT and NBT EVO units all carry an entry for it, though its name and menu position vary with the software.
• Cars of the G20 generation with the digital cluster already show speed as a number; their iDrive 7 software carries its own sport views, so neither coding is usually needed there.
• Base clusters without the on-board computer line cannot place the number; the coding writes but has no visible effect.
What Do You Need Before Coding?
The hardware list is short: a compatible adapter, a phone with OBDThink installed and a few calm minutes while parked. A cluster write should not be interrupted, so the preparation aims at a stable connection and a documented starting state.
• Get an OBD or ENET adapter that suits your car and pair it with the phone beforehand.
• Keep the ignition on and the engine off, and avoid opening doors during the write.
• Take a full backup of the current KOMBI coding and keep a copy outside the car.
• Note the cluster and head unit type from the app's identification screen.
• If the battery is weak, code after a short drive; stable voltage lowers the risk of a failed write.
How Do You Code the Digital Speedometer with OBDThink?
The process is a single-parameter change driven through a guided toggle. The app reads the KOMBI module, shows the current value and writes the new one after your confirmation; the cluster then performs a short refresh.
• 1. Leave the engine off, switch the ignition on and plug the adapter into the diagnostic port.
• 2. Start OBDThink, wait for the vehicle scan to finish and confirm the cluster type.
• 3. Accept the backup prompt and check that the file has landed on your phone.
• 4. Open the KOMBI entry in the module list and locate the BC_DIGITAL_V line.
• 5. Select the value aktiv and wait for the write to complete.
• 6. Press the BC button on the indicator stalk to cycle through the on-board computer pages.
• 7. Verify that the speed number appears on the selected page while the ignition is on.
• 8. If you want Sport Displays, activate its entry in the head unit section in the same session.
IF the number never appears THEN you may be on another BC page; advance the stalk once more
IF the number is missing from every page THEN check that the write completed and repeat it once
IF Sport Displays is missing from the menu THEN its entry was not activated, or the unit and engine software do not support the gauges
The fastest verification is the BC button on the indicator stalk: cycling through the pages makes the speed number appear on its own line; if it does not, the page selection is missing, not the write.
How Do You Revert or Adjust the Display?
Reverting simply returns the parameter to its factory value. With a backup, OBDThink writes the file back in one tap; without one, switching the BC_DIGITAL_V line to nicht_aktiv gives the same result. After the cluster restarts, the line shows its factory content again.
• Restoring the backup is always the cleanest route; every line returns to the state saved at backup time.
• To revert a single line, set only the BC_DIGITAL_V value back to nicht_aktiv.
• Cycle the ignition afterwards, so the cluster redraws the line with the new state.
• Revert the Sport Displays entry separately; the two features live in different modules.
• Export and keep the final report; it documents the factory state before a sale or service visit.
After the revert, the speed number no longer appears in the on-board computer line; the cluster draws only its factory pages, which confirms the parameter is back at its old value.
What Problems Can Occur After This Coding?
The most frequent report is not actually a fault: the value was written, but the driver is on a different page of the on-board computer. Cycling the pages with the stalk button brings the number up, so the first check is always the page selection.
More rarely, the connection drops during the write and the cluster falls into a temporary error state. No panic is needed: an ignition cycle and a repeat of the same write recover it. Losing the feature after a dealer software update is also known; applying the toggle again is enough.
Do not unplug the adapter or start the engine during the write; an interrupted cluster write can leave the line empty until it is repeated. And while driving, keep your eyes on the road, not on the number.
Which Questions Come Up Most Often?
Questions cluster around four points: accuracy, inspections, warranty and the relation to full digital clusters. The short answers below rest on the fact that both features live purely in the display layer.
• Is the number identical to the needle? Yes; both read the same speed signal, and the number may differ by one unit only through rounding.
• Does it cause trouble at inspections? No; a display option does not modify the legal speedometer, and the needle and warnings stay untouched.
• Is the warranty affected? Coding is visible to a workshop; restoring the backup before a sale or service visit closes that discussion early.
• Is it needed on the full digital cluster? No; those clusters already show speed as a number, so only the Sport Displays addition remains.
Confirm the cluster type, take the backup, then activate BC_DIGITAL_V; the number appears in the cluster within minutes. Open Sport Displays in the same session and both cosmetic features are done over one connection, each returnable to the factory state whenever you choose.
