BMW E90 Digital Speed in the Cluster: BC_DIGITAL_V Coding

On the E90, a numeric speed readout in the instrument cluster is enabled by setting BC_DIGITAL_V in the KOMBI module to aktiv. After coding, speed appears as a figure in the lower display. A second parameter, BC_DIGITAL_V_KORREKTUR, decides whether that figure shows true speed or the speed the needle indicates.
Why does digital speed read differently from the needle?
Speedometers are not permitted to show less than the true speed, so they are deliberately calibrated at the factory to read slightly high. The margin is typically two to five per cent. With BC_DIGITAL_V_KORREKTUR set to nicht_aktiv the digital figure shows true speed without that margin; set to aktiv it matches the needle exactly.

Which E90 model years does it cover?
Community lists mark BC_DIGITAL_V for every model year from 2006 through 2011. The correction parameter BC_DIGITAL_V_KORREKTUR is only marked for 2006, 2007 and 2011; on other years the line may be absent and the digital figure simply follows the needle.

• Without the correction line, the digital figure shows the same speed as the needle.

How do you code it?
The work happens in the KOMBI module and touches two lines. OBDThink is an independent BMW coding and diagnostics app and is not affiliated with BMW AG. Before writing to KOMBI, note down your service dates; per the source list, cluster coding can affect service counters and dates on some cars.
• Photograph the service intervals and remaining distance before you code anything.
• Park on level ground and switch the ignition on without starting the engine; the cluster is coded in this state.
• Connect with OBDThink, select the KOMBI module and read the coding data.
• Save a backup, then set BC_DIGITAL_V to aktiv.
• If you want true speed, set the BC_DIGITAL_V_KORREKTUR line to nicht_aktiv.
• Write the change, switch off, wait a minute and take a short drive to check.
Reading live speed data in OBDThink and comparing it with the cluster figure shows immediately which way the correction parameter is working.
How do you revert it?
Reverting means setting BC_DIGITAL_V back to nicht_aktiv; the figure disappears from the display and the needle is untouched. If you also changed the correction parameter, return it to its previous value. A pre-coding backup undoes both in one step.

What should you watch for with KOMBI coding?
The instrument cluster is the module that holds service data and trip computer records. According to observations in the source list, some cars lose their trip meter, average consumption and clock after coding. The same source reports that on a 2011 car the service counters and dates survived; that is a single year-specific observation, not a general rule.
If you set digital speed to true speed, the number you read no longer contains the legally required safety margin. Take that into account when observing limits; enforcement measures true speed, but the needle's margin used to give you a buffer.
What if no figure appears?
First move the trip computer display to the right page, because digital speed is not a page of its own but a field in the lower display, and you may need the stalk to cycle through pages. Second, read the KOMBI data back to confirm the coding was actually written. Third, on some iDrive-equipped cars the readout appears in a different position.
